About

Portaferry Gears Up for the 2025 Narrows Series – A Four-Day Maritime Festival Set to Thrill from 10th–13th July

One of the most anticipated events in the Irish Sea sailing calendar returns this July as the Narrows Series 2025 sets sail from 10th–13th July, kicking off with the infamous Bar Buoy Race – a thrilling spectacle as a fleet of over 150 boats charges out of Strangford Lough into the open sea.

Hosted in Portaferry, on the east shore of the Strangford Narrows, the four-day maritime celebration will showcase a packed schedule of sailing races, family activities, cultural showcases, and water-based adventures. Drawing crews from across the Lough, the Narrows Series has grown into a major fixture, backed by Ards and North Down Borough Council and the Department for Communities.

Portaferry’s proud shipbuilding and seafaring legacy. Once home to a thriving boatyard in the 1800s, Portaferry is internationally recognised today for its connection to the celebrated Ruffian class yachts, particularly the Ruffian 23, designed and built locally by brothers Billy and Dickie Brown.

A Spectacle On and Off the Water

The Narrows Series is more than a regatta it’s a festival for all. This year’s expanded programme includes:

On-the-water experiences for the public, including guided cruises across Strangford Lough and past the iconic filming location of Winterfell at the National Trust’s Castle Ward in Strangford town.

Boat rafting and interactive kids’ water activities, offering everyone a chance to make a splash.

Live music, and local food vendors celebrating the region’s produce.

Guided walking tours, a family-friendly treasure map trail, and the National Trust’s Nugent’s Wood trail for nature lovers.

The Portaferry and Strangford Trust Museum, telling the story of the area’s maritime heritage

“This year’s Narrows Series will be one of the most competitive and community-focused yet,” said a spokesperson for the organising committee. “We’re thrilled to offer something for everyone from seasoned sailors to families wanting a fun day by the sea.”
