Whiterock

The small village of Whiterock is situated on by the sea on idyllic Strangford Lough. It is known for its utter beauty. Hidden gems and points of interest are dotted within the landscape. The small village of Whiterock is situated by the sea and is known largely for its sailing clubs, Strangford Lough Yacht Club and Down Cruising Club.

The Light Ship at Whiterock

The Light Ship Petrel is iconic to the shores of Whiterock. Built in 1915 by the Dublin Dockyard Company.  It is the only lightship still afloat in Ireland. Although this restored historic vessel is the headquarters of Down Cruising Club, it is also available for private hire for events.

Sketrick Castle

Between the two Yacht Clubs is Sketrick Castle, a 15th Century tower house on Sketrick Island, now in ruins. Sketrick Castle has a rich history and although it was actively involved in warfare during the 16th century, it wasn’t until 1896 that half of it collapsed due to a storm.

The Tranquil setting of Strangford Lough

Whiterock and Sketrick Island also provide stunning scenery for tranquil walks. The hidden paths that run around Sketrick Island provide picture perfect views that everyone can enjoy. Visitors might even encounter some donkeys and horses.

Situated on Sketrick Island is Daft Eddy’s restaurant, which is renowned for serving great food. Whether you arrive by boat or car to try the food make sure you take time to dine out and enjoy the view.

Getting to Whiterock

Near to the small and pretty villages of Balloo and Killinchy, which are located two miles inland, venture to Whiterock, which sits directly on the western shores of Strangford Lough, 5 miles south of Comber on the A22 road to/from Downpatrick.

Best accessed by road and Translink public transport (bus).
