As part of European Heritage 2026, the Donaghadee Heritage Preservation Society invites visitors to discover the dramatic maritime history of the town through an immersive exhibition of shipwrecks and sea rescues in local waters. Set within the evocative setting of the historic Sir Samuel Kelly lifeboat, the exhibition brings Donaghadee's seafaring past vividly to life.
Through guided interpretation, storytelling and engaging displays, visitors will hear powerful accounts of courage, loss and community resilience, including the story of the Princess Victoria disaster. These experiences offer a direct connection to the realities of life saving at sea and the people who risked everything to protect others.
At its heart, the exhibition highlights the importance of caring for both physical heritage and living memory. By preserving the lifeboat and sharing the stories connected to it, the project shows how fragile maritime heritage—vessels, skills and personal testimony—can be protected and passed on, ensuring these powerful coastal stories continue to resonate with future generations.
