Part of the Columbanus Festival 2026
This talk will explore Irish place names associated with the monastic heritage on the island of Ireland. The names of these places give us insights into the transition from paganism to Christianity and life in early medieval Ireland. It will also discuss some of the places in continental Europe where Columbanus and his disciples founded churches and monasteries. Dr Paul Tempan undertook doctoral research on Irish place-names at Queen’s University Belfast (2007-11) and worked as a research assistant, later a research fellow, at the Northern Ireland Place-Name Project (2006-13). He now works with Libraries NI and is an independent researcher. He chairs the community research project Belfast Street Names and co-edits the peer-reviewed journal Nomina.
Parking is available on site at SPACE theatre, as well as on the street.
The building is suitable for wheelchair and disability access. A light lunch will be served after the talk.
