About
The Hall was opened in 1883 for the purpose of Freemasonry in Bangor. The land was originally donated to Lord Clanmorris by his father-in-law, Robert E Ward of Bangor Castle, to build the Clanmorris's family home. Following Robert E Ward's death, Lord Clanmorris took up residence in Bangor Castle.
In the 1880s when Lord Clanmorris was Worshipful Master of Union Lodge, which was then Northern Ireland's largest masonic lodge. He was instrumental in raising funds for the erection of a new hall, which was built by McLaughlin & Harvey and opened in 1883.
Since then the Hall has been the home of a number of masonic lodges over the years and in 1904 the building was put in trust to the then oldest lodge, Union Lodge, where responsibility rests to this day.
The hall remains an important part of Bangor's heritage and continues to serve a role in its community, being available for use by local organisations.
The meeting room, once described as "one of the finest rooms of its kind in Ireland" contains many masonically related artifacts from over the years.
