The Walled Garden Helen's Bay EHOD 2026

47 Craigdarragh Road, Helen's Bay, County Down, BT19 1UB
The Walled Garden Helen's Bay EHOD 2026

About

Explore a hidden garden within a restored 19th-century demesne, brought back to life through care, craftsmanship, and community. Reflecting this year’s theme, Heritage at Risk: Revive, Resist, Reimagine, the garden showcases how historic spaces can be sensitively restored and reimagined for the future.

Join owners James and Lorraine Small for a guided walk (11:00am, booking essential) to discover the garden’s history, restoration, and vision. Wander the grounds, including the restored Victorian Glasshouse, and experience this unique project in progress. Discover how traditional craftsmanship, ecological principles, and local traditional skills are bringing new life to the garden, while respecting the layers of history embedded in every corner.

Whether you are a garden lover, history enthusiast, or simply curious, this is a rare opportunity to experience a restoration project in progress. See, hear, and feel the dedication that is reviving a once-forgotten space, and be inspired by a garden that honours the past while looking confidently to the future.

Nearby, Old Mill House—currently on the Heritage at Risk Register—offers a reminder of the importance of protecting our historic places (not open during the event).
