About

This event is organised by and was submitted by Bangor Carnegie Library, Libraries NI

Bangor Carnegie Library is delighted to celebrate Book Week NI with a varied programme of free events for adults and children, featuring local history, literature, poetry and creative activities. Events take place from Monday 19 to Saturday 24 October, with advance booking advised or essential for most sessions.

The programme begins on Monday 19 October, 3.00–4.00pm, when Quintin Oliver presents The Enigma of Andrew Carnegie – Robber Baron or Visionary Philanthropist? The talk will explore the fascinating life, career and legacy of Andrew Carnegie, whose philanthropy helped establish libraries across Ireland and around the world.

For younger visitors, Wednesday 21 October, 3.00–4.00pm brings Make Your Own Monster and Owl Corner Bookmarks, a creative craft session suitable for children aged 5–11.

Children can also discover the ancient world in Stories and Shadows: Greek Myths, led by Dr Steph Holton of The Open University. Participants will encounter some of the gods, goddesses, monsters and heroes of Greek mythology before recreating their stories by making their own shadow puppets. The workshop is suitable for children aged 6–11.

On Saturday 24 October, 10.30am–12.30pm, multi-award-winning poet Stephanie Conn leads Pockets of Joy, a poetry workshop offering participants the opportunity to explore and develop their own writing.

The programme concludes that afternoon, 1.30–3.30pm, with a Q&A featuring local writer Siobhán Murphy, author of The Hedgefall Chronicles. Come along to hear about her writing, her work and the experiences behind her books, with an opportunity to put your own questions to the author.

All events are free. Places are limited for some activities, so early booking is recommended. For further information or to reserve a place, contact Bangor Carnegie Library on 028 9127 0591 or speak to a member of library staff.
