You’ve GoT to Visit the Shores of Strangford Lough
When Storm Gertrude blew over the trees along Northern Irelands Dark Hedges (that are better known to Game of Thrones® fans as the ‘Kingsroad’), Tourism Northern Ireland decided to save that piece of history for the fans.
With the fallen wood we carved it into 10 intricate doors that are now hung across a variety of locations in Northern Ireland, each once telling the story of a season 6 episode.
Ards and North Down are proud to be home to one of the Doors in Portaferry, Fiddler’s Green, Co. Down. Famous for its character and charm, Fiddler’s Green is both a pub and B&B in the central square of the historic small town of Portaferry.
Let your adventure begin in the breath taking region of Strangford Lough (AKA The Narrow Sea) and retrace the steps of the Stark family and Jon Snow. With varied opportunities to take in the Game of Throne film locations from walking or cycling trails to boat trips, the choice is yours.
Two of the famed ‘Doors’ are in local pubs here, and with the quaint ferry journey you can easily visit both and sample the hospitality of the Fiddlers Green, Portaferry, and The Cuan Guest House, Strangford, and perhaps even stay a while in the accommodation on offer. Strangford village is home to Castle Ward which was used as a filming location and home of Winterfell, the backdrop for much of season one and where you will find the Whispering Wood and Robb Stark’s Camp. For a captivating experience book onto one of Clearsky Adventures tours and dress up in costume, step into the set and stand exactly where the characters Jon Snow, Robb or Bran Stark stood and perhaps even meet the Dire Wolves.
While in Portaferry be sure to visit Aquarium Exporis with many exhibitions, or simply take it easy enjoying an ice-cream and leisurely stroll in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Experience it all, just a short drive away! There is a lot on offer to keep you busy.
