Looking for a day out with a difference for your family, or just yourself? Then a visit to the Northern Ireland Model Show could be just the ticket. Now in its 29th year, the model show is the largest model show in Ireland and is bigger and brighter than ever.
A key theme for the show highlights the 75th anniversary of the D Day landings during second world war. This is reflected in several displays, the largest of which is “Operation Overlord”, a very large working display illustrating the preparations for the invasion. This includes railways, warships, landing craft, tanks, military vehicles and much more. It’s a spectacular display that has toured Britain and can now be seen in Bangor.
In addition, the local historical Society, FHINDA will be showing photographs that tell the story of the role Co. Down played. Another diorama created by a local family will also show mannequins in military uniforms of the period. The Pickie Boat club will be exhibiting working model warships in addition to sea going vessels of all types
The D Day displays are only a small part of what is to be seen at the show. The spectacular LEGO models will delight the children as will the indoor flying display organised by the Belfast Flying Club. The Drumawhey Miniature Railway will be offering a ticket for a free ride on their trains to all the children who visit their stand, whilst Petite Properties will be displaying dolls houses, furniture and accessories. Don’t miss the “Cake Box Challenge “, a new fun feature of the show. Modellers have been invited to show their creativity by producing a diorama within a standard size cake box.
The serious modellers can enjoy the opportunity to browse the many trade stands offering models of boats, planes, trains, cars, militaria, accessories and tools necessary for their hobby. At this show, there is something for everyone.
To keep visitors refreshed, excellent catering facilities are available, providing hot snacks, sandwiches, tray bakes, teas, coffees, etc.
The Model Show is being held at the Bangor Grammar School, located on the Gransha Road, Bangor, BT19 7QU. It’s open on Saturday 13th April from 10.00 until 5.00pm and on Sunday 14th April 12.00 until 5.00pm. There is ample free car parking and a bus service from Bangor station on Saturday. The show is wheelchair friendly and even offers a baby changing facility and mothering room.
