About

Discover the fascinating heritage, craftsmanship and enduring appeal of the kilt at The Story and Craft of Kilts, a unique hands-on experience at the Ulster Folk Museum. This engaging workshop explores the history of tartan and Highland dress, from its origins to the skilled artisans keeping the tradition alive today

Guests will have the opportunity to examine textile examples from the museum's collections and meet the museum's expert in-house weavers to learn about the traditional processes involved in creating tartan fabric. Participants can also try their hand at traditional kilt pleating techniques, with no previous experience required.

The event will feature a special guest appearance from Brad of Harris Kilt Company, Ireland's only dedicated kilt maker. Based on Sandy Row, Belfast, the company specialises in both traditional and contemporary Highland dress and is passionate about preserving the craft of kilt-making while developing tartans that tell local stories.

This intimate workshop takes place across several exhibit buildings within the museum and includes general admission to the Ulster Folk Museum, allowing visitors to explore the site before or after the event.
