Step back to a time when flax fields stretched across the local countryside and Irish linen was renowned throughout the world.
From Flax to Fine Linen is an immersive heritage experience that uncovers the remarkable story of Ulster's linen industry through the lives of the people it transformed. Set within the historic surroundings of The Walled Garden and Old Mill House, Helen's Bay, this unique journey explores the striking contrast between the hardworking men and women who cultivated and spun the flax, and the elegance enjoyed by those who could afford the finished cloth on their dining tables.
Your experience begins beside the flax field with a traditional elevenses of buttered barmbrack and tea. Here, your host, Lorraine brings the landscape to life through fascinating stories of flax growing, the harvest and the communities whose livelihoods depended upon it. Discover how the annual pulling of the flax was not only a time of hard work, but also of laughter, friendship and romance, with many courtships and marriages beginning among the fields of blue.
From there, step inside the Old Mill House, where you'll discover how flax fibres were transformed into one of the world's most sought after fabrics. Guided by Christine, of Kiri Cottage Crafts, experience the traditional art of spinning, try your hand at the spinning wheel and create your own embroidered linen handkerchief to take home as a keepsake of your day.
The experience concludes in the beautiful Victorian Glasshouse, where you'll enjoy an elegant afternoon tea accompanied by a complimentary glass of sparkling wine, or a non-alcoholic alternative, a fitting celebration of the refinement and prestige that made Irish linen famous across the globe.
Blending captivating storytelling, hands on activities, authentic heritage settings and warm hospitality, From Flax to Fine Linen is more than a workshop or guided tour. It is a journey through Ulster's rich industrial and social history, revealing how one remarkable crop shaped communities, created fortunes and left a legacy that continues to define our heritage today.

As the flax fields form part of this immersive experience, guests are encouraged to dress for the outdoors. Waterproof footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended so you can enjoy the journey whatever the weather brings.
Visitors must have the ability to be able to walk through a garden setting which may incorporate some uneven ground. As the Experience is delivered across the Walled Garden Estate, some terrain may be unsuitable for those with accessibility issues. By car: From Belfast, follow the main A2 road to Bangor, following directional signage to Helen'S Bay. Onsite parking available
By bus or rail: See Translink website for bus and rail departure and arrival times. Closets rail stop is Helen’s Bay, 1.0-mile walk via Bridge Road and Craigdarragh Road.
