Newtownards Workhouse Minute Book

About

Ards Historical Society has installed a display at Ards Visitor Information Centre, 31 Regent Street, Newtownards that provides an insight into the origins of the workhouse system in Ireland, with specific information about the workhouse in Newtownards, the famine and Bully's Acre that was the burial place for paupers prior to the famine and subsequently the final place of rest for many of those that did not survive the ravages of starvation and disease.
Accompanying the display is a narrated video with musical accompaniment that tells much about the famine in and around Newtownards and looks at Bully's Acre. The video is the concept of a collective of friends and neighbours in Newtownards and made as part of a Corrymeela facilitated project "Our Places, Our Pasts, Our Perspectives."
The display will continue until the 22nd November. Ards Visitor Information Centre is open until 5pm each day with the exception of Sunday.
