22nd June 2026

Ards and North Down Borough Council is delighted to celebrate the official launch of the fifth year of the Groomsport Inclusive Beach, in partnership with the Mae Murray Foundation.
As the only facility of its kind in the Borough, the Inclusive Beach continues to provide a welcoming and accessible environment where individuals of all ages and abilities can enjoy the coastline. The initiative offers a free beach equipment loan scheme alongside a programme of inclusive activities, helping to remove barriers and ensure that everyone can experience the benefits of the outdoors.
The programme is delivered in partnership with the Mae Murray Foundation, an organisation committed to creating opportunities for people of all abilities to participate in activities, build friendships, and explore the world in an inclusive and supportive environment.
The 2026 season is now open and will run until Sunday 29 August, with the scheme open to the public every Saturday and Sunday from 11.30am to 4.30pm. A range of engaging activities will take place throughout the summer, including beach fun days and community events.
The launch event featured a variety of activities, including an African Drum Circle, and welcomed attendees from local organisations, schools and the wider community.
Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Craig Blaney, said:
“It is an absolute pleasure to celebrate the launch of the fifth year of Groomsport Inclusive Beach. This fantastic initiative reflects our shared ambition to create a Borough where everyone feels welcome, included and able to take part.
Thanks to the dedication of the Mae Murray Foundation and our Council teams, this beach offers far more than access – it provides confidence, independence and the opportunity for families to enjoy special moments together.
We are proud to support a project that not only enhances accessibility but also strengthens community wellbeing and showcases our Borough as a leader in inclusion and innovation.”
Kyleigh Lough, CEO of the Mae Murray Foundation, also attended the event and spoke about the importance of continuing to expand inclusive opportunities across Northern Ireland’s coastline.
Groomsport Inclusive Beach continues to set a benchmark for accessible tourism and community wellbeing, ensuring that more people can enjoy the natural beauty of the Borough in a safe, supportive and inclusive way.
