Newtownards town win Champion High Street 2019 for Northern Ireland at The Great British High Street Awards.

On the 23rd January 2020, hosted at The George hotel in Edinburgh, entrants of the awards in their respective categories, government officials, proud partner Visa, supporting partners and independent merchants as well as our independent judges. The winners were celebrated for all the fantastic work being done in their local communities, supporting small businesses, and working to revitalise their high streets.

Winners from England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland were crowned in each of the categories; Champion High Street and Rising Star High Street. The Champion Award recognises those high streets across the UK with exceptionally strong local communities, who are leading the way to the high streets of the future. The Rising Star category celebrates up-and-coming local communities who are on their way to transforming for the future. 

In Northern Ireland there were three finalists for the Champion High Street Award. All shortlisted high streets were visited by the Great British High Street Judges who assessed them against their original entry. This accounted for 80% of the overall score with the final 20% determined by public voting on the website, to show the support of their community.

The Champion High Street Award for Northern Ireland went to Newtownards. This high street’s success is focused around engaging community initiatives like Every Customer Counts, which helps businesses provide access for customers with disabilities, and other community events to increase the town’s social media presence and make the area accessible for all.
