Live music concerts are back at Portico!

After 18 months of being forced to close due to the Covid restrictions, the Portico of Ards in Portaferry is finally able to open its doors to audiences. More than 50 concerts have been rescheduled over the last year and a half, which means there’s a jam-packed calendar of events coming up between now and Christmas.

The first concert features Insieme Brass and takes place on Sat 21 August. Insieme Brass is a collective of some of the finest Brass musicians in Northern Ireland including Pamela Stainer (trumpet), Nathan Moore (trombone), Dr Jonathan Corry (trumpet), Jonny Stewart (French horn) and Les Neish (tuba). The programme showcases new works, classic original brass quintet compositions and arrangements of some popular jazz standards. Highlights include pieces by Victor Ewald, Peter Maxwell-Davies, Fats Waller and a selection of songs from West Side Story.

Country and traditional Irish music fans should not miss the gig on Sat 28 August when country music legend Brendan Quinn is joined by two of Ireland’s top traditional Irish musicians, accordion maestro and 2013 Gradam Ceoil winner Dermot Byrne and world renowned fiddle player Ciaran Tourish - both from Donegal supergroup Altan - to perform a mix of Country, Trad and Americana. Brendan has spent over fifty years making music, and has had many hit songs such as It’s Four In The Morning, Bandy The Rodeo Clown and Daddy’s Little Girl.

Portico’s Chair, Neil McClure, said, “It has been a very long 18 months without seeing all our many friends and regular Portico visitors and we really look forward to welcoming everyone back. We have gone to great lengths to make sure we comply with all of the Covid-related health and safety regulations and we’d like to thank all of our supporters, particularly the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Ards and North Down Borough Council, for helping us through this difficult period.”

From September through to December concerts include Ryan McMullan, The Pirates of Penzance, The Bjorn Identity, Shane Todd, The Shamrock Tenors and many more.  To find out more about Portico or concerts coming up please visit porticoards.com
