Bangor today, Friday 22 May, has proudly welcomed two traditionally rigged vessels, Spirit of Falmouth and Pellew, which have sailed into the city, marking a highlight moment ahead of the much-anticipated Sea Bangor weekend.

Crewed by a rotating team of 70 wounded, injured and sick (WIS) veterans and serving personnel, the ships are undertaking the remarkable Full Circle Expedition — a 2,000-mile voyage around the UK carrying the prestigious Invictus Games Flag. As a host port on this inspiring journey, Bangor has the honour of welcoming the crew and showcasing the community’s strong support for veterans, resilience and recovery.
The expedition is coordinated by veteran sailing charity Turn to Starboard in partnership with Invictus Games Birmingham 2027 and aims to raise £300,000 to fund a second tall ship. This will enable the charity to support even more veterans facing challenges such as PTSD, physical injury, isolation and loss of confidence.
Founded by Prince Harry in 2014, the Invictus Games use sport as a powerful tool for recovery and rehabilitation, bringing together wounded service personnel from around the world.
Setting sail from Falmouth on 17 March 2026, the Full Circle Expedition will visit 23 ports across England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales before returning to Falmouth on 11 June 2026. Bangor’s role as a host port marks an important milestone as the expedition builds momentum toward the Invictus Games Birmingham 2027.

They remain in Bangor, forming part of the Sea Bangor festivities, Sat 23 and Sun 24 May, 12noon – 6pm. The weekend is expected to bring a vibrant maritime atmosphere, with the public invited to see the impressive vessels up close and meet the inspirational crew.
The Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Gillian McCollum said:
“We are incredibly proud that Bangor was chosen as a host port for the Full Circle Expedition. It is a privilege to welcome these brave veterans and serving personnel to our shores and to recognise their resilience, courage and service.
Sea Bangor weekend provides the perfect opportunity for our community and visitors alike to come together, celebrate our maritime heritage and show our support for those who have given so much. I would encourage everyone to come along over the weekend and say hello to the crew.”
Sally Terry, CEO of Turn to Starboard, said:
“This expedition brings together two organisations committed to empowering veterans through challenge, camaraderie and community, each united in the belief that adventure can be truly transformative.
While Invictus Games Birmingham 2027 harnesses the spirit of sport to inspire recovery and rehabilitation, Turn to Starboard draws on the unique challenges of life at sea to rebuild confidence, restore purpose and help veterans navigate life with intention and fulfilment.
More than a voyage, this expedition is a powerful story of courage, service and renewal, showing how adventure and the sea can heal, inspire and bring people together.
We are delighted to bring this inspiring message to Bangor and reach more veterans while highlighting their challenges and remarkable achievements.”
Alderman Trevor Cummings, Veterans’ Champion for Ards and North Down, said:
“As Veterans’ Champion for Ards and North Down, I am incredibly proud to see Bangor play a part in supporting such an inspiring initiative. The Full Circle Expedition highlights the resilience, courage and determination of our veterans, while also shining a light on the challenges many continue to face.
It is vital that we, as a community, continue to support veterans and their families, ensuring they feel connected, valued and understood. Welcoming the crew to Bangor is a meaningful opportunity to show our appreciation and to recognise the important role organisations like Turn to Starboard play in helping veterans rebuild confidence and find renewed purpose.
We also wish all those involved every success as they look ahead to the Invictus Games Birmingham 2027, where their strength, determination and spirit will no doubt inspire people across the world.”
Following their arrival, the ships and their crew have received a warm welcome in Bangor, and residents, families and visitors from across Northern Ireland are encouraged to come along over the weekend to say hello to the crew, celebrate their journey and enjoy the energy and atmosphere of Sea Bangor weekend.
