Rewind with a trip to Mount Stewart which is a neo-classical family home and discover some of the most unique gardens in the world. Voted as one of the top ten gardens in the world, Mount Stewart reflects a rich tapestry of design and planting artistry bearing the hallmark of its creator. Lady Londonderry’s passion for bold planting schemes coupled with the mild climate of Strangford Lough allows rare and tender plants from across the globe to thrive in this celebrated garden. Each of the formal gardens exudes a distinct character and appeal and further afield visitors can enjoy the beautifully landscaped and informal grounds surrounding the picturesque lake walk. You can stroll through the gardens or avail of one of our guided garden tours (with one of the knowledgeable gardening team) to the formal gardens and beyond. Come and see how the recent £7million restoration has transformed the house including new rooms on show, the opportunity to see nationally and internationally significant family portraits, stunning silver collections and other family treasures.

Head into the bustling town of Newtownards, dubbed 'the heart of the Ards Peninsula', to enjoy a delicious lunch in the various eateries and why not indulge in some retail therapy in the independent shops and boutiques?
Take the time to explore this historic town further, visit Iconic Newtownards sights such as Scrabo Tower, a dominant feature of the area. Picturesque from every angle, the tower overlooks Newtownards and the northern tip of Strangford Lough and those who take the steep walk to the tower are rewarded with stunning 360 degree views.

In and around the town centre itself, you will discover more remnants of the town's rich history, such as Newtownards Priory, the substantial remains of a Dominican (Black) Friary founded in 1244, the only one of its type in Northern Ireland.
Sir Hugh Montgomery, who settled this area when the Ulster Scots arrived in the early 1600’s, restored the church in 1607 and added a small chapel. However, it fell into disrepair in the middle of the 18th century. It is part of the Great Wars Trail and Columban Way Heritage Trail. The Priory is currently not open to the public because of ongoing conservation work, however it is open occassionally for guided tours, keep an eye on our #ExperienceAND Guided Tours page for these.
Another iconic landmark in the town centre is The Market Cross, which dates from 1636 and marks where markets and events were once held.
The focal point of the town centre is Conway Square. Flanked by retailers, coffee shops and eateries, it is always full of life. The attractive Ards Arts Centre is located here, too.
