Uncover the history of Bangor Abbey, the Graveyard & Castle Park with this walking tour
This tour takes place every Thursday in July and August | All proceeds go to Bangor Abbey Restoration Fund | Parking is available at the Parish Centre, Bangor Abbey.
Our tour starts with the history of the Bangor Abbey site including the story of the saints Comgall, Columbanus and Gall and the mystery of the Bangor mermaid Li Ban, before moving into the graveyard to hear about some of Bangor’s famous , or infamous, residents among whom is Captain Colville, the Privateer who drowned in Ballyholme Bay and Archibel Wilson who was hanged for his part in the 1798 Rebellion to name but a few!
We then continue our tour along the Bell Trail, the art installations commissioned by the local Council to commemorate the travels of Columbanus, which lead us to our final stop at Bangor Castle to discover its history. While here you may want to visit the North Down Museum, the coffee shop or walk on to the walled garden.
