Information on attractions, accommodation, activities and events

Council has agreed a series of measures to enable us to continue to deliver critical services during the COVID-19 pandemic. All Council buildings are closed to the public until further notice, including all Visitor Information Centres (VIC's).

Please direct any queries with regards Portaferry VIC and the local area to Ards Visitor Information Centre on 028 9182 6846 / Enquiries can me made via email only and will be responded to within a few days of receipt.

All Council events and events organised by outside agencies on Council land are cancelled until 31 August 2020.

Portaferry Visitor Information Centre is situated beside Portaferry Castle, a 16th century tower house overlooking scenic Strangford Lough and a short walk from the town centre. The Castle was built by the Savage family to guard the entrance to Strangford Lough, a unique and wonderful place of immense international importance for nature conservation.

Portaferry is home to Exploris aquarium and is well known for the annual Gala Week Float Parade. It has its own small Marina, the Portaferry Marina. The Portaferry - Strangford Ferry service (just below the VIC), operates regularly throughout the day between the villages of Portaferry and Strangford, less than a mile apart.

Make Portaferry VIC your first stop for all you need to know about places to visit, where to stay, get a bite to eat or discover what’s on in the area. Welcoming staff will be delighted to help you make the most of your visit - so take advantage of their local knowledge and the wide range of free brochures and leaflets available on local attractions, events and activities to make your visit a memorable one. It is also home to an enticing gift shop - pick up a little souvenir of your visit!

Staff can help you plan your day out, short break or holiday in the area and offer information and advice for the next leg of your journey with information on every county in Northern Ireland. Buy tickets for many local events including Experience Ards and North Down Tours.

The Stables within the Centre explores the history of the area from the Vikings and Normans to the influence of the Ulster Scots.  The Saddlery room gives kids a fun space to get creative with arts and games.

The Centre is also home to the Loft Gallery and the established “Art in the Loft” exhibition series showcasing the work of local artists, craftspeople and makers from the Borough and beyond.  This series changes on a monthly basis while the centre is open.

During July and August, the Centre hosts a range of family fun activities each Saturday afternoon so come along and join in the fun for free and spend quality time together!

Lift access is available to the upper floor.
