The Stables at Ballygraffan is a private horse farm set in the middle of Strangford Lough’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Two stables have been converted into self-catering cottages, with breath taking views of the Lough. But these aren’t just any self-catering facilities; they’re connected to an exceptional personal development experience facilitated by being in touch with the wonderful horses who live there.
The owner, June Burgess, combined successful careers in hospitality and international equestrian competition. Bringing these two strands together has been a labour of love, creating intimate space and offering a remarkable equine experience for personal development. It is the chance to relax, live in the present and find out a lot more about yourself.
June focusses on the communication between guest and horse. This interaction and the manner in which you work with the horses demonstrates the way you approach people and obstacles in life. Guests quickly discover what they can do differently to get better results, both with the horse and in life. Self understanding and greater confidence result. It’s also fun! No riding is involved and June is a certified Life Coach and registered Equine Facilitator.
Ballygraffan is a sanctuary of peace and relaxation, offering guests the chance to de-stress, re-energise and reboot. This is an area steeped in history, a hive of Irish rebellions and interesting characters, giving Ballygraffan added intrigue. There’s a 3000 year old Neolithic burial mound on the farm where June offers guided meditations, Qi Gong, a barefoot walking path and plenty space to walk and see the wildlife and birdlife on the 50 acre farm and beyond.
At one level the accommodation is quirky - Maurice’s and Harry’s Stables are what they say they are, each converted to create an airy, bright en-suite room with double bed, kitchen and shower room.
A breakfast hamper with local produce can be eaten on the balcony, giving amazing views over the surrounding countryside. LED lighting, internal sensors, recycling policy, radiator thermostats give peace of mind, but crucially you’re in a beautiful landscape, surrounded by fields, where Maurice and Harry are still prancing.

The Green Tourism programme was funded by the Council’s Recycling Community Investment Fund - a scheme which is powered by the recycling efforts of local residents and businesses. Thanks to an increased amount of recycling by the local community, almost £15M has been saved in landfill costs since the programme’s inception. These savings have allowed the Council to create the RCIF which supports new and existing environmentally friendly initiatives.
