Have you ever wondered what it takes to look after the Castle Espie nature reserve? Now is your chance to find out. You will meet the team who look after the reserve and get the chance to really understand and even participate in this important work.
Castle Espie provides a window on Wetlands, the work of the WWT and Strangford Lough, an area of international ecological importance. The area managed by the WWT at Castle Espie covers 400 hectares and consists of saline lagoons, limestone grassland, saltmarshes and reed beds, all of which take careful management and maintenance in order that they continue to provide a home for diverse wildlife including light bellied brent geese, kingfishers, bats and dragonflies.
Working alongside our Reserve Manager you will learn what a day in the life of a Warden truly involves.
The day begins at 9am (before the reserve opens to the public) and finishes with refreshments in the Kingfisher café at 11.30am. The activity involved will vary and will include practical conservation work in all weathers.
